Early Intervention
When a young person is struggling at school, it’s important to intervene as early as possible.
Brookswood Secondary provides five opportunities between October and March for parents to get information on their child’s progress, and to intervene.
1. Interim Report in October (Oct. 23) This is an informal evaluation of the student’s overall progress and work habits.
2. Parent Interviews – November 1, 2 - a followup to the interims
3. Term 1 Report – December 15
4. Term 2 Report – March 3– issued to students
5. Parent Interviews – March 8/9 – a followup to the Term 2 report
6. Term 3 Interims go home in April .
Causes for Concern
When you read your child’s interim or term report, look for the following indicators of a child who may be at risk in terms of his/her learning:
1. Unsatisfactory work habits (“N”)
2. An “I” (incomplete) letter grade. This means your son or daughter is missing assignments or has not met learning outcomes and is at risk of failing. Makeup work is assigned and must be satisfactorily completed by a deadline in order for the student to receive a passing mark for the term.
3. Teacher request for an interview.
What Can You Do?
There are several ways you can stay informed and be proactive.
1. Check my online Homework Page to see what kind of work is being done in and out of class.
2. Go on the MyEd Gradebook
3. E-mail me your concerns.
4. Book a parent interview.
5. Contact one of our counselors and ask for a Round Robin to be done.
6. Request that your child attend the homework club, which is open after school from Monday to Thursday, as well as two mornings a week. Contact admin. for more info.
